Danfoss VLT Micro Drive FC 51 Selection Guide

Danfoss VLT Micro Drive FC 51 frequency converter range

The Danfoss VLT Micro Drive FC 51 is the compact general-purpose frequency converter in the VLT range. It covers 0.18 kW to 22 kW, it is built to be mounted side by side with no clearance between units, and it is designed to be commissioned in minutes rather than hours. For the majority of pump, fan, conveyor and mixer duties in a plant, it is the drive that does the job without paying for functions that will never be used.

This guide explains how the range is structured, how to read the type code, which size to pick for a given motor, and what has to be ordered alongside the drive. Every model listed here is available from Renda Trading Company.

How the Range Is Split

There are two supply variants. The single-phase version runs from 1 x 200-240 V and covers 0.37 kW to 2.2 kW, which suits workshop machines, small pumps and any site without a three-phase outlet. The three-phase version runs from 3 x 380-480 V and covers 0.37 kW to 22 kW, which is the normal industrial supply. In both cases the output to the motor is always three-phase, so a single-phase drive is also the standard way to run a three-phase motor from a single-phase supply.

Reading the Type Code

A type code such as FC-051P2K2T4E20H breaks down as follows. FC-051 is the VLT Micro Drive series. P2K2 is the motor power, so 2K2 means 2.2 kW and PK75 means 0.75 kW. The next letter is the supply: S2 is single-phase 200-240 V and T4 is three-phase 380-480 V. E20 is the IP20 enclosure and H marks the RFI filter version. In day-to-day ordering the six-digit Danfoss code number is what matters, for example 132F0022, because it identifies exactly one product with no room for error.

Choosing the Right Size

Select the drive by the motor rated current on the nameplate, not only by the kW figure. Older motors, motors with long cables and motors that start under full load all draw more current than a catalogue table suggests. The FC 51 delivers 150 % overload torque for 60 seconds, which is enough for normal pump, fan and conveyor starting. For high-inertia loads or frequent heavy starts, move one size up.

What the FC 51 Includes as Standard

  • Output frequency 0 Hz to 200 Hz, with 150 % overload torque for 60 seconds
  • U/f and VVC plus motor control, with Automatic Motor Tuning for accurate motor data
  • Built-in PI controller, so the drive can hold a pressure, flow or level setpoint without a PLC
  • Smart Logic Controller for simple sequences and conditions inside the drive
  • Integrated RFI filter and, from 1.5 kW upwards, an integrated brake chopper
  • Electronic thermal motor protection, flying start and DC braking
  • Efficiency up to 98 %, and coated electronics for a longer life in dusty or humid plants
  • RS-485 with Modbus RTU and Danfoss FC protocol on board

Control Panels Are Ordered Separately

The FC 51 is shipped without a keypad. This keeps the price of an OEM drive down, because a machine builder who commissions from a PC does not need one. For a plant that maintains its own drives, order at least one panel per site so that a technician can read the fault log and adjust parameters at the machine.

Code number Item Description
132B0100 LCP 11 Numerical local control panel without potentiometer
132B0101 LCP 12 Numerical local control panel with potentiometer

Installation Notes

  • Keep the free space above and below the drive that the manual specifies, even when mounting side by side
  • Use screened motor cable and terminate the screen at both ends for EMC compliance; a decoupling plate makes this simple
  • Keep the motor cable as short as the layout allows, and separate it from signal cables
  • Set the motor nameplate data first, then run Automatic Motor Tuning before adjusting ramps
  • For a 1.5 kW or larger drive that must stop a heavy load quickly, add a braking resistor to the built-in brake chopper

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Danfoss VLT Micro Drive FC 51?

It is a compact general-purpose AC frequency converter from Danfoss, covering 0.18 kW to 22 kW in single-phase 200-240 V and three-phase 380-480 V versions. It is used to control the speed of three-phase asynchronous motors on pumps, fans, conveyors, mixers and similar machines.

What power range does the FC 51 cover?

Renda Trading supplies the FC 51 from 0.37 kW to 2.2 kW on a single-phase 200-240 V supply and from 0.37 kW to 22 kW on a three-phase 380-480 V supply. All versions give a three-phase output to the motor.

Can the FC 51 run a three-phase motor from a single-phase supply?

Yes. The S2 versions take a single-phase 200-240 V input and deliver a three-phase output, which is the standard way to run a three-phase motor where only a single-phase supply is available. Size the drive by the motor current, and note that the single-phase range stops at 2.2 kW.

Does the FC 51 include a control panel?

No. The drive is delivered without a local control panel. Order LCP 11, code number 132B0100, without a potentiometer, or LCP 12, code number 132B0101, with a potentiometer. The drive can also be commissioned from a PC with MCT 10 software.

Which FC 51 models have a brake chopper?

The brake chopper is integrated from 1.5 kW upwards. Below that rating there is no brake chopper, so use DC braking or a longer ramp-down time instead of a braking resistor.

What is the protection class of the FC 51?

IP20 as standard. An IP21 / NEMA Type 1 conversion kit is available where a higher rating is needed inside or outside a control panel.

Can FC 51 drives be installed side by side?

Yes. The FC 51 is designed for side-by-side mounting with no clearance between the units, which is why it fits into narrow panels. Only the free space above and below for cooling air has to be respected.

How do I read a code such as FC-051P2K2T4E20H?

FC-051 is the VLT Micro Drive series, P2K2 is 2.2 kW, T4 is a three-phase 380-480 V supply, E20 is the IP20 enclosure and H is the RFI filter version. The matching Danfoss code number for that model is 132F0022.

Which enclosure size will I get?

The FC 51 uses five enclosure sizes from M1 to M5, chosen by power and supply. M1 is 150 x 70 x 148 mm at about 1.1 kg and M5 is 335 x 165 x 248 mm at about 9.5 kg. The size for each model is listed in the tables above.

How do I order Danfoss FC 51 drives from Renda Trading?

Send us the Danfoss code number and the quantity, for example 132F0022. If you are not sure of the size, send the motor nameplate rating, the current and the site supply voltage and we will confirm the correct model before quoting.
