The SICK G2 is the family you reach for when there is almost no room left in the machine. It comes in two miniature housings: G2 Slim at 7.7 x 21.8 x 13.5 mm, and G2 Flat at 14 x 24 x 3.5 mm, thin enough to slide into a slot. Between them the family covers all four photoelectric principles, so the same mounting concept can be used for a proximity check, a reflector barrier or a through-beam.

The Four Sensing Principles
Background suppression (GTB2S and GTB2F) measures where the reflected light lands rather than how bright it is, so the sensor decides on distance. It sees dark objects as reliably as light ones and ignores whatever stands behind them. This is the safe default for conveyors, fixtures and anywhere with a wall or a guard close behind the object.
Energetic proximity (GTE2F) decides on the amount of reflected light. It is simpler and more economical, and it is the right choice when nothing disturbing sits behind the object and the objects are reasonably light in colour.
Retro-reflective (GL2S) works against a reflector opposite the sensor, so it reaches up to 3 m with power and wiring on one side only. A polarisation filter lets it detect shiny and film-wrapped packs without being confused by their own reflections. A PL10F reflector is supplied with each sensor.
Through-beam (GSE2S) gives the most dependable detection of all, because the object only has to break the beam. Colour, gloss and transparency matter far less. The part numbers on this site are the receiver units; the matching G2 sender is ordered separately and we quote the pair on request.
G2 Slim or G2 Flat
G2 Slim, 7.7 x 21.8 x 13.5 mm, is the standard miniature housing and carries the whole range of principles, including the versions with a potentiometer for adjustable sensing distance. G2 Flat, 14 x 24 x 3.5 mm, is only 3.5 mm thick and is used where the sensor has to lie inside a slot, a channel or a thin panel. The Flat housing is made from VISTAL and the Slim housing from ABS; both are IP67.
Reading a G2 Type Code
Take GTB2S-P5311 as the example.
- GTB is the sensing principle: GTB background suppression, GTE energetic proximity, GL retro-reflective, GSE through-beam receiver.
- 2 is the G2 family.
- S or F is the housing: S for G2 Slim, F for G2 Flat.
- The first letter after the dash is the output: P is PNP light switching, N is NPN light switching, F is PNP dark switching, E is NPN dark switching.
- The next digit is the connection: 1 is a 2 m cable, 5 is an M8 3-pin plug on a 200 mm lead, 2 is a 4-wire cable with both switching modes.
- The last three digits are the SICK device version, which fixes the sensing range and the optics.
When ordering, always quote the SICK part number as well. It identifies exactly one article and removes any doubt.

They set the output and the switching mode. P is PNP light switching, N is NPN light switching, F is PNP dark switching and E is NPN dark switching. The rest of the sensor is identical.
What is the difference between light switching and dark switching?
Light switching means the output is active when the receiver sees light. Dark switching means the output is active when it does not. On a proximity sensor light switching gives an output when the object is present; on a retro-reflective or through-beam sensor it gives an output when the beam is clear.
How far can a G2 sensor detect?
It depends on the principle. Background suppression models reach 18 mm, 36 mm or 120 mm depending on the version, energetic models 15 mm or 30 mm, retro-reflective models up to 3 m with a reflector, and through-beam receivers up to 2 m.
Do the G2 through-beam models include a sender?
No. The GSE2S part numbers are the receiver units. The matching G2 sender is a separate article; tell us how you want it connected and we will quote the pair together.
Does a GL2S retro-reflective sensor come with a reflector?
Yes, a PL10F reflector is supplied with the sensor. The maximum range of 3 m is quoted with the larger PL40A reflector, which also makes alignment more forgiving.
What supply voltage do G2 sensors need?
10 V DC to 30 V DC, drawing about 20 mA without load. The output can drive up to 50 mA, and the supply and outputs are protected against reverse polarity, short circuit and overcurrent.
