The SICK G6 is the miniature photoelectric sensor family fitted on packaging, bottling, assembly and material handling machines all over the world. Every model is the same 12 x 31.5 x 21 mm housing with the same mounting holes, 10 to 30 V DC and IP67, and what changes is the sensing principle, the output and the connection. How to choose
- Nothing can be mounted on the far side and the background is far away or dark: GTE6.
- Nothing on the far side but the background is close or bright, or the parts vary in colour: GTB6.
- A reflector can be mounted opposite and you need more range or colour-independent detection: GL6.
- The object is clear glass, PET or film: GL6G.
- The part is small, or you need a precise edge: GTB6L or GL6L.
- Longest range, dusty or wet line, dark or shiny parts: GSE6 through-beam.
Reading the SICK G6 type code
Taking GTB6-P4211 as the example:
- GTB6 — the family and the sensing principle. GTE6 is energetic diffuse, GL6 retro-reflective, GL6G for transparent objects, GSE6 a through-beam pair, GE6 a receiver, GS6 a sender, and an L in the name means the laser version
- P — the switching output. P is PNP, N is NPN, and D marks a sender with no output
- 4 — the electrical connection. 4 is an M8 4-pin plug, 1 is a moulded 2 m 3-wire cable
- 211 — the SICK internal version digits for the optical and output configuration of that model

Frequently asked questions
What is the SICK G6 series?
G6 is SICK miniature photoelectric sensor family. Every model shares the same 12 x 31.5 x 21 mm ABS/PC housing, the same two mounting holes, 10 to 30 V DC supply and IP67 rating. What changes between models is the sensing principle, the output type and the electrical connection, so one mounting fixture can take a diffuse, a retro-reflective or a through-beam sensor without any change to the machine.
What is the difference between diffuse, retro-reflective and through-beam?
A diffuse sensor, GTE6 or GTB6, sends light out and looks at what the object reflects back; nothing is mounted on the far side. A retro-reflective sensor, GL6, aims at a reflector opposite it and detects the interruption of the returned beam, which gives more range and does not care about the colour of the object. A through-beam pair, GSE6 with GS6 and GE6, puts the sender on one side and the receiver on the other, which gives the longest range and the highest reliability but needs wiring on both sides.
What does background suppression mean, and when do I need GTB6 instead of GTE6?
GTE6 triggers on how much light comes back, so a bright background can trigger it and a black object may be missed. GTB6 measures where the reflected light lands on its receiver, which is a measure of distance, so it detects what is in front of the set point and ignores everything behind it. Choose GTB6 whenever the background is close, bright or changing: parts on a steel conveyor, in a chute, or against a machine frame. Choose GTE6 where the background is far away or dark and cost matters.
What is the GL6G for?
The G version is tuned to detect transparent objects. Clear PET bottles, glass and plastic film return only a small part of the beam, and an ordinary retro-reflective sensor cannot separate that from clean air. The GL6G resolves that small signal drop reliably, which is why it is the version used on bottling, filling and film wrapping machines.
When is the laser version worth it?
GTB6L and GL6L use a class 1 red laser instead of an LED. The light spot is far smaller, about 0.4 mm at 150 mm on the GTB6L, so small parts, thin edges and narrow openings can be resolved that an LED spot would average out. The GL6L also reaches 10 m with a P250F reflector. Where the target is large and the tolerance loose, the LED versions are cheaper and just as reliable.
NPN or PNP: which one do I order?
The PLC input card decides it, not the sensor. PNP switches the positive line into the input and is the normal choice in Europe and the Middle East; NPN switches the negative line and is common on Japanese and older Chinese machines. Fitting the wrong type means the input never sees the signal. Everything else in a G6 model is identical between N and P, so check the input card, or send us a photo of it and we will tell you which one you need.
Cable or M8 plug?
The digit after the output letter says which: 1 is a moulded 2 m 3-wire cable, 4 is an M8 4-pin male plug. The cable version is cheaper and suits sensors that are rarely changed. The plug version is the one to fit where a sensor has to be swapped quickly during production, because the cable stays in the machine and only the sensor is replaced.
Which reflector do the GL6 models need?
GL6 and GL6G are rated with the PL80A reflector and GL6L with the P250F. The published range is only valid with the matching reflector, so it is not an optional accessory. We quote the reflector with the sensor unless you tell us you already have it.
