The Siemens 6AV6648-1CM01-3AX0 is the Wi-Fi communication module for the SIMATIC HMI SMART V5 and SMART Plus panels, supplied with an external antenna.
Fitted to the panel, it gives the machine a wireless network connection – useful for commissioning without dragging a cable into the panel, for viewing the HMI from a tablet on the plant floor, and for sending production data to a cloud service over MQTT or SIMICAS IoT.
This is a Siemens accessory for the SMART panel range; it is not a general purpose Wi-Fi adapter and is used only with the panels it is designed for.

WinCC flexible SMART. Siemens keeps the versions upward compatible, so a project built for an earlier SMART panel opens in the newer version of the software.
Which PLCs can this panel talk to?
SIMATIC S7-200 SMART over Ethernet or RS485, plus Modbus RTU and several third-party controllers. If you need to connect to an S7-1200 or S7-1500, choose a SMART Plus panel instead.
Can I use it to replace an older SMART panel?
In most cases yes, but check the cut-out: the panel families keep the same mounting dimensions within a screen size. Send us the order number printed on the back of the panel you are replacing and we will confirm the correct replacement.
Is the touch screen replaceable?
The touch overlay is not sold as a user-replaceable spare by Siemens. For a damaged screen the normal route is a complete replacement panel, which is why most plants keep one spare panel per machine size.
