The SICK GTB10-P4211 is a photoelectric proximity sensor with background suppression from the SICK G10 series. It has a sensing range of 20 mm to 950 mm, a PNP output and an M12 4-pin plug. The housing measures 20 x 50 x 39 mm, runs on 10 to 30 V DC and is rated IP67.
The G10 is the bigger brother of the SICK G6. Same idea, same red PinPoint LED, but a larger optical system and therefore far more range: where a G6 diffuse sensor reaches 250 mm, the G10 reaches 950 mm, and the retro-reflective version works out to 12 m. Use the G10 when the sensor has to be mounted back from the product, when the conveyor is wide, or when a G6 simply does not reach.
Background suppression is what makes this version different from a plain diffuse sensor. It measures where the reflected light lands on the receiver, not how much comes back, so it detects the object in front of the set distance and ignores everything behind it. A dark part on a bright machine frame is still detected reliably, and the switching point barely moves when the surface colour changes.
Adjustment is by potentiometer, 5 turns, the output can be set to light switching or dark switching, and response time is 500 microseconds, which is fast enough for anything a conveyor will throw at it. The housing is ABS with a PMMA lens and the two mounting holes take an M4 screw.
The M12 4-pin plug version is the one to fit where the sensor has to be swapped quickly during production. The cable stays in the machine and only the sensor is replaced.

What does the type code GTB10-P4211 mean?
G10 is the SICK compact photoelectric family in the 20 x 50 x 39 mm housing. GTB10 is background suppression, GTE10 is energetic diffuse and GL10 is retro-reflective. The letter after the dash is the output, PNP on this model, and the first digit is the connection: 1 is a 2 m cable and 4 is an M12 4-pin plug. The last three digits are the SICK internal version digits for that model.
What is the difference between the G10 and the G6?
Same red PinPoint LED and the same idea, different size and range. The G6 is 12 x 31.5 x 21 mm and reaches 250 mm diffuse or 5 m with a reflector. The G10 is 20 x 50 x 39 mm and reaches 950 mm diffuse or 12 m with a reflector. Use a G6 where space is tight and the distance is short, and a G10 where the sensor has to be mounted back from the product or across a wide conveyor.
When do I need background suppression instead of GTE10?
Whenever the background is close, bright or changing. A GTE10 triggers on how much light comes back, so a shiny machine frame behind the object can trigger it and a black object may be missed. The GTB10 measures where the light lands on its receiver, which is a measure of distance, so it sees what is in front of the set point and ignores the rest.
Is the output NPN or PNP, and does it matter?
This model is PNP. The PLC input card decides it, not the sensor. PNP switches the positive line into the input and is the normal choice in Europe and the Middle East; NPN switches the negative line and is common on Japanese and older Chinese machines. Fitting the wrong one means the input never sees the signal.
Can it be used in a washdown or dusty area?
It is rated IP67, which covers dust and temporary immersion, and it copes with a normal factory environment including packaging and bottling lines. It is not rated for high pressure washdown or continuous immersion; for those SICK offers stainless steel and IP69K families and we can quote those instead.
