The Festo LFR-3/8-D-O-MINI-A is a filter regulator from the Festo D series, Festo part number 162696. It combines a compressed air filter and a pressure regulator in one metal unit with G3/8 female threads on both ports. It filters to 40 micron, regulates the outlet pressure from 0.5 to 12 bar, passes a standard nominal flow of 1600 l/min and weighs 410 g.
Compressed air entering the unit is swirled so that water droplets and larger particles are thrown out against the bowl wall and collect at the bottom, then the air passes through the 40 micron filter element before it reaches the regulator. The condensate bowl holds up to 22 ml and the drain on this version is fully automatic. A metal bowl guard protects the polycarbonate bowl.
The regulator section keeps the outlet pressure constant even when the supply pressure drops or the downstream demand changes, with a maximum pressure hysteresis of 0.2 bar. The setting knob has a detent so it cannot drift, and the housing is die-cast zinc rather than plastic, which is what makes this series suitable for industrial machines rather than workshop air lines.
This version comes without a pressure gauge. The gauge port is prepared and threaded, so a gauge can be added later, or the port can be left plugged where the pressure is monitored somewhere else in the system.
The unit is a Mini size, which is a 40 mm grid dimension, so it lines up with the other Festo D series units of the same size and can be built into a service unit combination with connecting plates, mounting brackets, a shut-off valve or a lubricator. Ambient and medium temperature range is 5 to 60 degrees C.

The inlet can be up to 12 bar in both cases.
Manual or fully automatic condensate drain, which should I choose?
This unit has a fully automatic drain. A manual drain has to be opened by an operator, which is fine where someone walks the line every shift. A fully automatic drain, the A version, empties the bowl by itself as the condensate collects, which is what you want on a machine nobody checks daily or where a full bowl would let water pass through to the valves.
What does the 5 micron and 40 micron filter grade mean in practice?
It is the size of particle the element holds back. The 40 micron element is the standard choice and gives the highest flow. The 5 micron element, the 5M version, catches finer particles and is used ahead of sensitive valves, air bearings, sensors and paint or food equipment, at the cost of a little flow. This unit is 40 micron.
Does this unit come with a pressure gauge?
No. This is the O version, supplied without a gauge. The gauge port is prepared and threaded, so a gauge can be screwed in at any time, or left plugged where pressure is read elsewhere.
