The Festo DSBC is the standards-based profile tube cylinder to ISO 15552, the standard that used to be called ISO 6431 and VDMA 24562. It is double-acting, comes in seven bore sizes from 32 to 125 mm, and is the cylinder most often found on packaging, bottling, assembly and material handling machines built in Europe. PPSA or PPVA: which cushioning to choose
Every DSBC in the standard range comes in two cushioning versions and the choice matters more than most people expect. PPVA has pneumatic cushioning that is adjustable at both ends: a screw in each cover sets how hard the piston is braked before it reaches the end of the stroke. It gives an engineer full control, and it is the right choice when one machine always runs the same part at the same speed.
PPSA has self-adjusting cushioning. There is nothing to set, the cylinder adapts itself to the load and the speed, and it keeps adapting when the machine is later run faster or with a heavier part. That removes a commissioning step and removes a common source of noise and wear on machines where nobody ever went back to reset the cushioning screws. Force, dimensions, mounting and sensors are identical on both versions.
How to size a DSBC cylinder
Start from the force the machine needs at the working pressure, not at 6 bar. Theoretical force is the piston area multiplied by the pressure, so a 50 mm cylinder that gives 1178 N advancing at 6 bar gives roughly 785 N at 4 bar. Retracting force is always lower because the piston rod occupies part of the piston area. Then add a factor for friction and for the dynamics of the movement: a factor of two is a common minimum, and more if the load is carried vertically or accelerated hard.
Check the stroke against the buckling limit of the piston rod for long strokes, and check the impact energy in the end positions against the moving mass and the speed. If the energy is higher than the cylinder can absorb, fit external shock absorbers or slow the movement with one-way flow control valves. Replacing another brand
ISO 15552 fixes the mounting dimensions, the port positions, the piston rod thread and the overall length for each bore size, so an ISO cylinder from SMC, Airtac, Camozzi, Parker, Bosch Rexroth, Univer or Metal Work can be replaced by a DSBC of the same bore and stroke without changing the machine. Yes. ISO 15552 replaced ISO 6431 and the German VDMA 24562 standard, and the mounting dimensions are the same. A cylinder described by any of these three numbers, in the same bore and stroke, will fit the same mounting holes, use the same port positions and have the same piston rod thread.
Can a Festo DSBC replace a cylinder from another brand?
Dimensionally, yes. Any ISO 15552 cylinder of the same bore and stroke from SMC, Airtac, Camozzi, Parker, Bosch Rexroth, Univer or Metal Work has the same mounting interface, so the DSBC bolts into the same place. What changes is the cushioning behaviour, the seal package and the service life. If you are replacing a cylinder, measure the bore, the stroke and the piston rod thread, or send us a photo of the label, and we will confirm the DSBC part number.
How do I choose the bore size?
Work out the force you need at your working pressure, then add a safety factor. Theoretical force at 6 bar is 483 N for the 32 mm bore, 754 N for 40 mm, 1178 N for 50 mm, 1870 N for 63 mm, 3016 N for 80 mm, 4712 N for 100 mm and 7363 N for 125 mm, advancing. Retracting force is lower because the piston rod takes up part of the piston area. Force scales almost linearly with pressure, so at 4 bar you have about two thirds of these figures.
Which sensors fit the DSBC?
The DSBC barrel has an integrated sensor slot, so slot-mounted magnetic proximity switches fit without a bracket and without adding width. The usual choices are SMT-8M, SME-8M and SDBT-MSX, with NEBU connecting cables. Two sensors are normally fitted, one for each end position.
What stroke lengths are available?
The standard range is 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, 125, 150, 160, 200, 250, 300, 320, 400 and 500 mm, and the 100 and 125 mm bores use a shorter list. Festo also builds any stroke from 1 to 2800 mm to order, with a longer lead time. All standard part numbers are listed on this page.
