The Airtac TCM12X20S is a double-acting tri-rod guided cylinder from the AirTAC TCL/TCM series with a 12 mm bore and 20 mm stroke. The piston rod and two guide rods are tied to one front plate, and the guides run in brass/bronze slide bearings (M), so the plate resists turning and side load without an external guide.

Reading the code: TC = tri-rod cylinder (double acting), M = brass bearing, 12×20 = bore x stroke in mm, S = with magnet (every TC cylinder has one, for position sensing); no thread suffix means the standard port thread.

Typical applications

  • Pick-and-place and transfer units that need a non-rotating plate
  • Gate, diverter and reject mechanisms on packaging lines
  • Positioning of sensors, cameras and tooling plates
  • Press-fit, clamping and lifting stations on assembly machines
  • Like-for-like replacement of an Airtac TCM12X20S

Compatibility and replacement

The TCL and TCM versions of the same bore and stroke share the ordering code layout; TCL guides run in linear ball bearings, TCM guides in brass slide bearings, and AirTAC lists tighter non-rotating accuracy and different safe-torque values for each. Port threads other than the standard are ordered with a suffix (for example T for NPT). When replacing an existing unit, match bore, stroke, bearing letter and the thread suffix printed on the old cylinder label.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose TCM12X20S or the TCL version?

TCM (brass bearing) is what you have here. Per AirTAC, the non-rotating accuracy of this bore is ±0.10° for TCM and ±0.08° for TCL. Check the safe-torque table for your stroke as well; when replacing a cylinder, keep the bearing letter on the old label so the machine behaves the same.

Which fittings do I need?

The ports are M5x0.8; other port threads (such as NPT) carry a suffix in the order code. Use push-in or speed-control fittings of the same thread and tube size suited to the flow.

How fast can it run?

AirTAC gives a speed range of 30-500 mm/s for this bore, with bumper cushioning. Use speed-control fittings to set the speed and keep impact at the stroke ends low.
