The Omron E39-R1S is the reflector used with E3Z retro-reflective photoelectric sensors such as the E3Z-R61 and E3Z-R81. It is the reflector the rated 4 m sensing distance is specified against.

A retro-reflective sensor is only as good as the reflector in front of it. The corner-cube surface of a proper reflector returns the beam along the exact path it arrived on, which is what lets the sensor distinguish its own light from everything else in the room. Substituting a mirror or a strip of reflective tape shortens the range and makes the sensor unreliable as soon as the alignment shifts.

Mount the reflector square to the sensor and check the alignment indicator on the sensor body. Keep the face clean: a film of dust or oil on the reflector reduces the returned light long before it becomes visible to the eye, and it is the most common cause of a retro-reflective sensor that works in the morning and fails by the afternoon.

It is the standard reflector for E3Z retro-reflective photoelectric sensors, and the reference reflector for their rated sensing distance.

E3Z retro-reflective models such as E3Z-R61 and E3Z-R81.

It will work at short range but it reduces the sensing distance and the margin against misalignment. For a reliable installation use the specified reflector.

Very often, yes. Clean the reflector face and check the alignment first, before replacing the sensor.
