The SMC SY is the 5 port solenoid valve that appears on more machines than any other. It is a pilot operated spool valve made in four sizes, and this guide covers the three that Renda Trading stocks as body ported single units: SY3000, SY5000 and SY7000. Every part number listed here is a 2 position single solenoid valve, the version used to drive a double-acting cylinder from one PLC output.
Which Size Do I Need
Size follows the cylinder and the speed you want. SY3000 has M5 x 0.8 threaded ports and push-in fittings for 4 mm and 6 mm tube, and suits small cylinders and tight panels. SY5000 has Rc 1/8 ports and fittings for 4, 6 and 8 mm tube, and is the size that fits most jobs on a normal machine. SY7000 has Rc 1/4 ports and fittings for 8 and 10 mm tube, and is used when a larger bore cylinder needs more air to move at the required speed. If a valve is undersized the cylinder simply moves slowly, so when in doubt take the larger size.
Reading an SY Part Number
Take SY5120-5LZD-01 as the example.
- SY5 is the series, SY5000. The choices are 3, 5, 7 and 9.
- 1 is the type of actuation: 1 is 2 position single solenoid, 2 is 2 position double, 3 is 3 position closed centre, 4 is 3 position exhaust centre and 5 is 3 position pressure centre.
- 20 marks the body ported single unit.
- 5 is the coil voltage. DC: 5 is 24 V, 6 is 12 V, V is 6 V, S is 5 V, R is 3 V. AC: 1 is 100 V, 2 is 200 V, 3 is 110 V, 4 is 220 V.
- L is the electrical entry. G is a grommet with a 300 mm lead, H a grommet with a 600 mm lead, L the L type plug connector, M the M type plug connector and D the DIN terminal.
- Z means the valve has an indicator light and a surge voltage suppressor. S is a surge suppressor only, and no letter means neither.
- D is the manual override. No letter is the non-locking push type, D is the push-turn locking slotted type and E is the push-turn locking lever type.
- 01 is the port size, Rc 1/8. M5 is M5 x 0.8, 02 is Rc 1/4 and 03 is Rc 3/8. Codes starting with C are push-in fittings: C4, C6, C8, C10 and C12 for 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm tube.
Quote the whole part number when ordering. Every letter changes the article, and a valve with the wrong electrical entry or the wrong override will not drop into an existing machine.

Choosing the Electrical Entry
The electrical entry decides how the valve is wired and how quickly it can be swapped. A grommet lead (G or H) is the cheapest and is fine where the valve is wired once into a terminal box. The L and M plug connectors let the coil be unplugged without touching the wiring, which is what most machine builders prefer for maintenance. The DIN terminal (D) takes a standard DIN 43650 form C plug, gives IP65 protection and is the usual choice for AC valves and for wet or dusty areas.
The letter Z, which adds an indicator light and a surge voltage suppressor, is worth having on almost every valve. The light tells a technician immediately whether the PLC output has reached the coil, and the suppressor protects the output card from the coil switching spike.

What is the SMC SY series?
SY is SMC’s family of 5 port pilot operated solenoid valves for controlling pneumatic cylinders. It is made in four sizes, SY3000, SY5000, SY7000 and SY9000, as single units and as manifold valves. The part numbers on this site are body ported single units with a 2 position single solenoid.
What is the difference between SY3000, SY5000 and SY7000?
Size and flow. SY3000 has M5 x 0.8 threaded ports and push-in fittings for 4 and 6 mm tube, SY5000 has Rc 1/8 ports and fittings for 4, 6 and 8 mm tube, and SY7000 has Rc 1/4 ports and fittings for 8 and 10 mm tube. A larger valve moves a larger cylinder at the same speed.
What does 2 position single solenoid mean?
The valve has one coil and a return spring. Energise the coil and the spool shifts, remove the signal and the spring returns it. A double-acting cylinder therefore extends while the output is on and retracts when it goes off, and returns to a known position if control power is lost.
What do the letters in SY5120-5LZD-01 mean?
5 is the coil voltage 24 V DC, L is the L type plug connector, Z means indicator light and surge voltage suppressor, D is the push-turn locking slotted manual override and 01 is the Rc 1/8 port size.
Which voltage should I order?
24 V DC is by far the most common on modern machines because the valve can be driven straight from a PLC output. 220 V AC and 110 V AC versions are used on older machines and on installations wired at mains voltage. The coil accepts plus or minus 10 percent of its rated voltage.
What is the operating pressure range of SY valves?
0.15 MPa to 0.7 MPa for a 2 position single solenoid valve with internal pilot, 0.1 MPa to 0.7 MPa for 2 position double, and 0.2 MPa to 0.7 MPa for the 3 position versions.
Do SY valves need lubricated air?
No. Lubrication is not required. Use clean dry air; if the line is already lubricated, keep lubricating it, because washing out the original grease and then running dry shortens valve life.
What is the manual override for?
It shifts the spool by hand so a cylinder can be moved during set-up, commissioning or fault finding without the PLC. The plain type springs back when released, while the slotted and lever types can be turned to stay latched.
Can I get the valve with push-in fittings instead of threads?
Yes. Part numbers ending in C4, C6, C8, C10 or C12 come with one-touch push-in fittings on the A and B ports for 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm tube. The supply and exhaust ports keep the threaded size of the series.
