The Festo DHRS-10-A is a two-jaw radial gripper from the Festo DHRS series, Festo part number 1310159. Its jaws swing right back through a full 180 degrees and it produces a total gripping torque at 6 bar of 15 Ncm when closing and 21 Ncm when opening. Repetition accuracy is 0.1 mm, the gripper weighs 44 g and it runs on compressed air from 2 to 8 bar through M3 ports.
At full opening the jaws fold almost flat against the body, so the gripper can be withdrawn straight past the workpiece inside a narrow machine. Lateral gripper jaw support carries high torque loads, and the jaws are positively driven from one piston so they stay synchronised. The housing is hard-anodised wrought aluminium and the jaws are high-alloy steel.
Jaw position is monitored with an SMH-S1 Hall sensor. This size does not have the slot used by the larger models, so the Hall sensor is the sensing option to plan for.
This is the double-acting version, without a compression spring. Compressed air both opens and closes the jaws, which gives the full 2 to 8 bar working range and the fastest cycle, but the workpiece is released if the air supply is lost.

Dimensions
The dimension drawing for the whole Festo DHRS series, including size 10, is in the image gallery on this page. It is the official Festo drawing with all reference letters, so it can be used directly for designing the mounting interface and the gripper fingers. CAD models for DHRS-10-A are available from Festo, and we can send you the datasheet for part number 1310159 on request.
What the DHRS-10-A is used for
- Loading and unloading machines where the gripper has to be withdrawn past the workpiece
- Handling inside narrow machine enclosures, because the jaws fold back through 180 degrees
- Transfer of shafts, rings, bottles and cylindrical parts between stations
- Feeding parts into lathes, milling machines and assembly fixtures
- Packaging and bottling lines where clearance above the product is limited
Choosing between DHPS, DHWS and DHRS
Festo builds three standard pneumatic gripper families and they are not interchangeable. DHPS parallel grippers slide both jaws in a straight line and hold the tightest repetition accuracy, 0.02 mm, which suits precise assembly. DHWS angle grippers swing each jaw out by 20 degrees so the part is cleared on release, which suits transfer between fixtures. DHRS radial grippers swing the jaws right back through 180 degrees, so the whole gripper can be withdrawn past the workpiece inside a tight machine.
A full side-by-side comparison of every size and every variant is on our Festo gripper selection guide.
Frequently asked questions
What does the type code DHRS-10-A mean?
DHPS is the Festo series for two-jaw parallel grippers, DHWS for angle grippers and DHRS for radial grippers. The number after it is the size, so this is size 10. The A stands for the standard version of the series. With no NC or NO suffix, the gripper is double-acting and has no spring.
What is the difference between the DHRS-10-A and the DHRS-10-A-NC?
Both are the same gripper body with the same pneumatic gripping torque. The A version is double-acting with no spring and works from 2 bar. The NC version has an integrated compression spring that closes the jaws when the gripper is depressurised, so the workpiece is still held if the air supply or the machine power fails, and it can also be driven single-acting. The NC version needs at least 4 bar because the air works against the spring. The DHRS series has no NO version. Size 10 is the exception: it is offered only as the double-acting DHRS-10-A.
How much gripping torque does the DHRS-10-A give at 4 bar instead of 6 bar?
The gripping torque of a Festo gripper follows the operating pressure almost linearly, so at 4 bar you can expect roughly 10 Ncm closing instead of 15 Ncm at 6 bar. Festo publishes exact force curves for each size in the DHRS catalogue, and the curves also depend on the lever arm of your gripper fingers.
Which position sensors fit the DHRS-10-A?
This size is monitored with the SMH-S1 Hall sensor. The larger sizes in the series use slot-mounted proximity switches instead, so do not order a slot sensor for this one.
How long can the gripper fingers be on the DHRS-10-A?
The limit is not the length itself but the load it puts on the jaws. This size takes a maximum static force of 30 N on a gripper jaw and a maximum static torque of 0.8 Nm in Mx, My and Mz. Longer fingers increase the torque and reduce the usable gripping torque, so the finger length has to be checked against those figures.
How far do the jaws of the DHRS-10-A open?
The jaws swing through a full 180 degrees, which folds them back almost flat against the gripper body. That is the point of a radial gripper: it can be pulled straight out past the workpiece in a machine where a parallel gripper would not clear it.
