The Siemens 6ES7288-5CM01-0AA0 is an SB CM01 signal board that gives an S7-200 SMART CPU a second serial port, switchable between RS232 and RS485 in software.
The CPU already has one RS485 port on board. The CM01 adds a second, which is exactly what a machine needs when the built-in port is already talking Modbus RTU to a set of power meters and a barcode scanner, a weighing indicator or a printer has to be connected as well. It also speaks USS, so Siemens drives can be controlled over the same two wires.
A signal board plugs into the recess in the front face of the CPU, so it adds function without adding a single millimetre to the width of the controller. Every expandable S7-200 SMART CPU takes exactly one signal board, and it can be fitted alongside the six EM expansion modules.
