The SICK IME12-04NNSZW2S is an inductive proximity sensor from the SICK IME series. It has a M12 x 1 nickel-plated brass barrel, a nominal sensing distance of 8 mm, a NPN normally open output and a 2 m 3-wire cable. It runs on 10 to 30 V DC, switches up to 200 mA and is rated IP67.

An inductive sensor detects metal without touching it. A coil in the sensing face generates a high frequency field; when a metal target enters that field it damps the oscillation, and the sensor switches. Nothing wears out because nothing touches, it does not care about dirt, oil or coolant on the target, and it is unaffected by light, colour or transparency. That is why it is the first choice for detecting cylinder positions, cams, shafts, gear teeth and metal parts on a machine.

This is the non-flush version, marked N in the type code. It reaches further, 8 mm on this size, because the field extends out of the sides of the barrel as well. It has to stand proud of any surrounding metal, so leave a free zone around the head or the metal itself will trigger the sensor.

Switching frequency is 2,000 Hz, so the sensor keeps up with fast machinery, and the yellow LED on the back shows the switching state, which makes setting it up and checking it later a matter of looking at the sensor rather than the PLC. The barrel is 63 mm long with 48 mm of thread, so it can be locked in place with the two nuts supplied.

The 2 m PVC cable version is the cheaper option and the one to use where the sensor is rarely changed and the cable runs straight to the terminal box.

What the IME12-04NNSZW2S is used for

  • Cylinder end position and piston detection where a magnetic switch cannot be fitted
  • Cam, shaft and gear tooth counting on rotating machinery
  • Metal part presence on conveyors, feeders and indexing tables
  • Position feedback on clamps, stoppers, turntables and tool changers
  • Speed and rotation monitoring, up to 2,000 Hz
  • Wet, oily and dusty areas where an optical sensor would need constant cleaning

Frequently asked questions

What does the type code IME12-04NNSZW2S mean?

IME is the SICK series of inductive proximity sensors. The first two digits are the thread size, so M12 x 1 here. The next two are the nominal sensing distance in millimetres, 8 mm. Then B means flush mountable and N means non-flush; the letter after it is the output, NPN on this model. The block at the end is the connection: W2 is a 2 m cable and C0 is an M12 plug, and the final letter is the SICK variant letter for that connection version.

Flush or non-flush: which one do I need?

Flush, the B version, has the sensing face level with the barrel so it can be screwed right into a metal bracket or machine block without the surrounding metal triggering it. Non-flush, the N version, reaches further because the field also comes out of the sides, but it must stand proud of any metal around it. If the sensor sits in a metal hole, order flush. If it is on a bracket in free air and you need the extra distance, order non-flush.

What is the sensing distance in practice?

The rated figure, 8 mm on this model, is measured against a standard mild steel target. Stainless steel, aluminium, brass and copper all reduce it, aluminium and copper by roughly half. Temperature and supply voltage move it slightly too. Design the mounting so the target passes at about half the rated distance and the sensor will work reliably for years.

Is the output NPN or PNP, and does it matter?

This model is NPN. The PLC input card decides it, not the sensor. PNP switches the positive line into the input and is the normal choice in Europe and the Middle East; NPN switches the negative line and is common on Japanese and older Chinese machines. Fit the wrong type and the input simply never sees the signal, so check the input card before ordering.

Can it detect plastic, wood or liquid?

No. An inductive sensor only detects metal. For plastic, cardboard, glass, liquid or any non-metal target you need a photoelectric sensor or a capacitive sensor instead, and we supply both. If you are not sure what the target is made of, send us a photo of the application and we will tell you which sensor type fits.

Can it be used in a washdown or dusty area?

It is rated IP67, which covers dust and temporary immersion, and it copes with a normal factory environment including packaging and bottling lines. It is not rated for high pressure washdown or continuous immersion; for those SICK offers stainless steel and IP69K families and we can quote those instead.

The rest of the range

The SICK IME series covers three barrel sizes, and the sensing distance follows the size.

  • SICK IME08 — M8 x 1 thread, 2 mm flush or 4 mm non-flush, 4,000 Hz, 4 models
  • SICK IME12 — M12 x 1 thread, 4 mm flush or 8 mm non-flush, 2,000 Hz, 12 models (this size)
  • SICK IME18 — M18 x 1 thread, 8 mm flush or 12 mm non-flush, 1,000 Hz, 6 models

For non-metal targets use a photoelectric sensor instead: the compact SICK G6 range for short distances and the SICK G10 range for long ones.
