The Festo DHPS-6-A is a two-jaw parallel gripper from the Festo DHPS series, Festo part number 1254039. It gives a stroke of 2 mm per gripper jaw, a total gripping force at 6 bar of 25 N when closing and 30 N when opening, and a repetition accuracy of 0.02 mm. It weighs 19 g, has M3 air ports and runs on compressed air from 2 to 8 bar.
Both jaws are driven from a single piston through a positively driven lever mechanism, so they always move together and centre the workpiece by themselves. They run on a plain-bearing T-slot guide that takes side loads and torques directly, which keeps long gripper fingers stable and accurate. The housing is hard-anodised wrought aluminium and the jaws are high-alloy stainless steel.
Jaw position is monitored with an SMH-S1 Hall sensor. This size does not have the slot used by the larger models, so the Hall sensor is the sensing option to plan for.
This is the double-acting version, without a compression spring. Compressed air both opens and closes the jaws, which gives the full 2 to 8 bar working range and the fastest cycle, but the workpiece is released if the air supply is lost.

Dimensions
The dimension drawing for the whole Festo DHPS series, including size 6, is in the image gallery on this page. It is the official Festo drawing with all reference letters, so it can be used directly for designing the mounting interface and the gripper fingers. CAD models for DHPS-6-A are available from Festo, and we can send you the datasheet for part number 1254039 on request.
What the DHPS-6-A is used for
- Pick and place of small and medium parts on assembly and packaging lines
- Loading and unloading CNC machines, presses and test rigs
- Handling caps, preforms, bottles and cartons on filling and bottling lines
- Feeding parts into welding, screwdriving and gluing stations
- Electronics and connector assembly, where the self-centring jaws set the part position
- Small-part handling in confined tooling, where the 19 g weight keeps the moving mass low
Choosing between DHPS, DHWS and DHRS
Festo builds three standard pneumatic gripper families and they are not interchangeable. DHPS parallel grippers slide both jaws in a straight line and hold the tightest repetition accuracy, 0.02 mm, which suits precise assembly. DHWS angle grippers swing each jaw out by 20 degrees so the part is cleared on release, which suits transfer between fixtures. DHRS radial grippers swing the jaws right back through 180 degrees, so the whole gripper can be withdrawn past the workpiece inside a tight machine.
A full side-by-side comparison of every size and every variant is on our Festo gripper selection guide.
Frequently asked questions
What does the type code DHPS-6-A mean?
DHPS is the Festo series for two-jaw parallel grippers, DHWS for angle grippers and DHRS for radial grippers. The number after it is the size, so this is size 6. The A stands for the standard version of the series. With no NC or NO suffix, the gripper is double-acting and has no spring.
What is the difference between the DHPS-6-A, the DHPS-6-A-NC and the DHPS-6-A-NO?
All three share the same gripper body and give the same pneumatic gripping force. The plain A version is double-acting with no spring, so it releases the part if the air is lost, and it works from 2 bar. The NC version adds a spring that closes the jaws when the gripper is depressurised, so the workpiece stays held after an air or power failure. The NO version adds a spring that opens the jaws instead, which is used for internal gripping and for parts that must be dropped on a failure. Both spring versions need at least 4 bar. Size 6 is the exception: it is offered only as the double-acting DHPS-6-A, with no spring version.
How much gripping force does the DHPS-6-A give at 4 bar instead of 6 bar?
The gripping force of a Festo gripper follows the operating pressure almost linearly, so at 4 bar you can expect roughly 17 N closing instead of 25 N at 6 bar. Festo publishes exact force curves for each size in the DHPS catalogue, and the curves also depend on the lever arm of your gripper fingers.
Which position sensors fit the DHPS-6-A?
This size is monitored with the SMH-S1 Hall sensor. The larger sizes in the series use slot-mounted proximity switches instead, so do not order a slot sensor for this one.
How long can the gripper fingers be on the DHPS-6-A?
The limit is not the length itself but the load it puts on the jaws. This size takes a maximum static force of 10 N on a gripper jaw and a maximum static torque of 0.5 Nm in Mx, My and Mz, and a maximum mass of 10 g per external gripper finger. Longer fingers increase the torque and reduce the usable gripping force, so the finger length has to be checked against those figures.
